Title: Mike McCarthy Press Conference Transcript - Feb. 26
Link: http://www.packers.com/news/releases/2010/02/26/3/
Date : Fri, 26 Feb 2010 16:22:47 CST
Packers Story: (How have you divided your time down here so far?)
Well, I got in yesterday. I had an opportunity to go to the interviews last night, and I actually spent some time this morning on special teams, with our special teams play. Had a couple meetings this afternoon, and my favorite part of the day has arrived.
(Do you at this point have a sense of what you're going to do on the offensive line next season?)
You mean how we're going to line them up? I think it's too early to obviously set a starting lineup because, as much as I've talked about it the last four years, I'd like to have one set and like to see them practice together every day and play together all year. Obviously with Chad Clifton and Mark Tauscher, with their situations, we're not ready to have a starting lineup yet.
(Have you expressed to Ted you want both of those guys back?)
Definitely. We'd definitely like to have Chad and Mark back. You can never..

Date : Fri, 26 Feb 2010 16:22:07 CST
Packers Story: (If there is no salary cap, there could be more than 200 players becoming restricted free agents rather than unrestricted. Is there potential for discontent, that a large number of those guys will be unhappy, increasing the possibility of missing mini-camps, OTAs and other things?)
I think that would be better addressed to those particular players in those circumstances. I think, you use the word discontent, I think there would be a certain amount of discontent on everybody's part with any sort of labor unrest or difficulties that we may or may not be going through.
(Do you know exactly what you want to do with contracts in 2011, 2012, or are you still figuring that out?)
We've been in ongoing conversations about what strategies the organization might take. We haven't really firmed all that up yet though.
(Are you surprised so many of the top quarterback prospects aren't working out?)
Quite frankly I've been r..

Title: Franchise Players Named
Link: http://www.packers.com/news/releases/2010/02/26/1/
Date : Fri, 26 Feb 2010 09:52:03 CST
Packers Story: Franchise player designations were announced for the 2010 NFL free agency signing period that begins on March 5.
In 2010, a club may designate a franchise player or a transition player in lieu of a franchise player, as well as one additional transition player.
The salary offer by a player's club determines whether the franchise player designation is exclusive or non-exclusive.
An "exclusive" franchise player - not free to sign with another club - is offered a minimum of the average of the top five salaries at the player's position for the current year as of April 15, 2010 or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary, or the average of the top five salaries at his position as of the end of last season - whichever of the three is greater.
If the player is offered a minimum of the average of the top five salaries of last season at his position, or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary, whichever is greater, he becomes a "non-ex..

Date : Sat, 06 Mar 2010 19:03:46 CST
Packers Story: Quarterback Aaron Rodgers' blindside protector is coming back for an 11th season in green and gold.
Veteran left tackle Chad Clifton has re-signed with the Packers after being an unrestricted free agent for roughly one day. Clifton has been Green Bay's primary starter at left tackle for each of his 10 seasons in the NFL since being drafted in the second round by the Packers back in 2000.
"Green Bay is the place I wanted to play all along," said Clifton, who visited the Washington Redskins on the first day of free agency, Friday, but agreed on a new contract with the Packers by nightfall. "There was never any question about that. This is a place I've spent 10 years, and it's a place where both my sons have been born.
"I'm very fortunate that my agent and Russ Ball and (GM) Ted (Thompson) were able to work something out and I don't have to think about (playing somewhere else). I can finish my career here in Green Bay, and that's what I really wanted to do."

Packers Story: Continuing an annual series now in its third year, Packers.com has again compiled a series of "Favorite Fives," various Top 5 lists of big plays from this past season.
Each list will be accompanied by a brief description of the context, plus video clips of the plays. The Packers Fan Poll on the left side of the page will allow fans to vote for their favorite. A new "Favorite Five" will appear each week for the next several weeks, with a new corresponding poll.
After all the lists have appeared, votes will be tabulated to compile a final "Favorite Five," and Packers.com visitors can then vote for their favorite play of the year for 2009.
The fifth installment is the Top 5 pass plays in road games. In chronological order, they are:

Link: http://www.packers.com/news/stories/2010/03/04/1/
Date : Thu, 04 Mar 2010 13:59:17 CST
Packers Story: Defensive coordinator Dom Capers' instant impact on units that assume his 3-4 scheme has been well-documented throughout his career, and Capers' impact on the Packers' defense in 2009 was undeniable.
Looking at the league rankings over the last two years, the Packers rose from 20th to second in total yards allowed, 26th to first in rushing yards allowed, and 22nd to seventh in points allowed in Capers' first season. The defense also led the league in takeaways.
But Capers doesn't view his rebuilding project as complete by any means, and not just because of the obvious - that the Packers struggled against the spread-out offenses with veteran quarterbacks. There's another area he's taking a good, hard look at that Head Coach Mike McCarthy mentioned briefly in his remarks at the NFL Scouting Combine last week, and that's the "sudden-change defense."
The Packers define sudden-change defense as those times the defense takes the field after a turnover or a long r..

Title: Swain's Spirits Strong On Long Rehab Road
Link: http://www.packers.com/news/stories/2010/03/02/1/
Date : Tue, 02 Mar 2010 14:40:16 CST
Packers Story: In discussing the toughest moments he's endured since injuring his knee late last October in Cleveland, Packers reserve receiver and special teamer Brett Swain didn't mention the pain of the torn ACL itself or the grueling rehab he's currently putting himself through.
"The hardest thing was on Sundays, walking through the locker room and watching everybody get ready for the games," Swain said. "That's the hardest thing about this injury. Surgery was hard and everything, but nothing compared to walking through the locker room on Sundays, because you want to be out there just as bad as they do."
It's easy to understand where Swain is coming from when you consider his career path to this point. He already had been through a season of watching the entire team get ready for games he couldn't play in, as a member of the practice squad throughout his 2008 rookie year. A seventh-round draft choice out of San Diego State, Swain didn't make the 53-man roster but used his year..

Link: http://www.packers.com/news/stories/2010/02/26/2/
Date : Fri, 26 Feb 2010 16:23:25 CST
Packers Story: In his annual visits with the media at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis on Friday, Head Coach Mike McCarthy was asked specifically about what it will take for the playoff-qualifying Packers of 2009 to perhaps become Super Bowl contenders in 2010.
McCarthy's answer was long-winded, yet it clearly pointed to specific parts in each of his team's three phases that he's expecting to improve in the coming year - penalties and punting on special teams, sacks on offense, and facing spread attacks on defense. Here's a synopsis of each of those with comments from McCarthy and General Manager Ted Thompson, who also spoke with the media in Indianapolis on Friday.
SPECIAL TEAMS
McCarthy noted that the Packers led the league in penalties on special teams for the second straight year, but statistically what stood out to him about those penalties is that nearly half of them - 12 of the 30 - were committed by first-year players.

Packers Story: With only three days remaining in February's Black History Month, the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame held its annual Panel Discussion event on Thursday night in Lambeau Field's sixth floor club level at the south end of the stadium.
The stage's impressive panel of guests featured Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive end Willie Davis, Packers Hall of Fame linebacker Dave Robinson, and the franchise's all-time leading rusher, running back Ahman Green.
Among the topics discussed early on was how athletics helped to accelerate integration during the Civil Rights Era, an advancement Davis credited in part to the relentless efforts of his coach - the legendary Vince Lombardi - to finding the absolute best player at each position, regardless of race or skin color.
"I think I'll say it now rather than later," Davis said. "But there is no question in my mind, that the Green Bay Packers under Vincent T. Lombardi created more diversity and created more change in the ..

Date : Tue, 23 Feb 2010 09:41:14 CST
Packers Story: Since the two offensive linemen became close friends as rookies with the Packers in 2006, Daryn Colledge has been trying to get buddy Jason Spitz to take an offseason trip somewhere out of the country.
"He never wants to leave Florida or Louisville or Green Bay, those are his comfort zones," Colledge said of Spitz, a Jacksonville, Fla., native who played his college football at Louisville. "Then this year when he got injured and I said 'Let's go on a trip,' he decided to pick the farthest place away he could find."
Indeed, having injured his back and sitting out nearly three-fourths of this past season (for an update, see below), Spitz had plenty of time to think about a destination. So he organized a 10-day, four-city trip through China and Thailand at season's end from which the two returned earlier this month.
With stops in Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai and Bangkok, the trip was eye-opening as well as exhausting, with everything they tried to pack into their ..

Johnny Jolly, interception of screen pass vs. Chicago (Sept. 13)

Title: Slocum, Whitt To Conduct On-Field Drills At Combine
Link: http://www.packers.com/news/stories/2010/02/18/1/
Date : Thu, 18 Feb 2010 14:49:18 CST
Packers Story: The hard-core Packers fans - or those simply looking for an offseason football fix - who will spend some time watching the NFL Network's wall-to-wall coverage of the Scouting Combine next week in Indianapolis might see some familiar faces on the Lucas Oil Stadium field during player workouts.
Green Bay special teams coordinator Shawn Slocum and cornerbacks coach Joe Whitt Jr. will be among the assistant coaches from around the league helping conduct the on-field drills of the prospects, an up-close position that has its benefits.
"It's a pressure-packed situation for those guys, because they know all the eyes in the NFL are looking at them, and this is their chance to make a statement," Slocum said. "You can really see how they respond."
Slocum will work as an on-field drill sergeant, so to speak, for the fourth straight year. He worked with the linebackers for two years before switching to special teamers - kickers, punters and snappers - last year.

Title: Scouts Highsmith, Seale Get Closer Look At Combine
Link: http://www.packers.com/news/stories/2010/02/16/1/
Date : Tue, 16 Feb 2010 15:52:58 CST
Packers Story: Most of the Green Bay Packers' personnel who will attend next week's annual Scouting Combine in Indianapolis will conduct the usual types of evaluations - watching players go through their drills and workouts from afar, and visiting with them in the formal interview sessions.
But two members of the team's scouting staff get a little bit different look at some of the prospects, carrying out the role of "group leader," a chaperone of sorts for a given position group.
Southwest scout Alonzo Highsmith and West Coast scout Sam Seale both have worked as group leaders at the Combine for the last several years, and they agree the experience gives them mental notes they can add to the official scouting reports on the players they work with over a three- or four-day span. This year's Combine begins Feb. 24.
"I always use it as an opportunity to meet the top players (at their position), see their attitude," said Highsmith, who has been a group leader for several diffe..

Title: Packers Make 'Unforgettable' Visit To Navy Carrier For Super Bowl
Link: http://www.packers.com/news/stories/2010/02/11/1/
Date : Thu, 11 Feb 2010 15:28:48 CST
Packers Story: The visit began with quite the thrill ride, and everything just got more and more impressive after that.
Last weekend, a group of Green Bay Packers - kicker Mason Crosby, punter Jeremy Kapinos, fullback John Kuhn, equipment manager Gordon "Red" Batty, assistant equipment manager Tom Bakken and head athletic trainer Pepper Burruss - joined more than 2,000 sailors aboard the USS John C. Stennis, a nuclear-powered Navy supercarrier, to watch Super Bowl XLIV.
Only they didn't just hop on the big boat from shore. They flew to it, somewhere off the coast of San Diego, and landed on the aircraft carrier just like all the military personnel do. And not in some helicopter or hovercraft either.
Treated as "distinguished visitors" by Navy Entertainment, a part of the U.S. Navy's morale, welfare and recreation division that brings various athletes and celebrities to visit troops away from home, the Packers contingent piled into a twin-engine C-2A Greyhound that left th..

Title: Statistical Oddities Of 2009
Link: http://www.packers.com/news/stories/2010/02/09/1/
Date : Tue, 09 Feb 2010 13:35:16 CST
Packers Story: There's plenty of time in the offseason to digest everything that happened in 2009, and one way to do so is to look at some of the more obscure yet interesting statistics from the past season.
So here's a review of 2009 by the not-so-well-known numbers, 1 through 17 - one for each of the games played, including the NFC Wild Card playoff contest.
1: The number of games quarterback Aaron Rodgers completed less than 50 percent of his passes. It came in the loss at Tampa Bay in Week 9, when Rodgers missed topping 50 percent by one throw, going 17-of-35. In his two seasons as a starter, that's the only game Rodgers has dipped below 50 percent passing.
2: The number of times a Green Bay defender totaled double digits in solo tackles in a single game. Charles Woodson did it in Week 2 vs. Cincinnati with 10, and Nick Barnett did it in Week 4 at Minnesota with 11. Barnett also had nine solo tackles on three other occasions.
3: The numbe..

Title: Rookies Made Their Mark On Defense In '09
Link: http://www.packers.com/news/stories/2010/02/03/1/
Date : Wed, 03 Feb 2010 13:40:01 CST
Packers Story: Despite the defensive letdown in the NFC Wild Card playoffs, one factor that points to a promising future outlook for the Green Bay Packers' defense is that it achieved what it did in 2009 - ranking No. 1 in the league against the run and No. 2 in total yards allowed - with significant contributions from rookies.
As the season wound down, Clay Matthews and Brad Jones were the two starting outside linebackers, B.J. Raji was filling in at nose tackle for an injured Ryan Pickett, cornerback Brandon Underwood was pressed into duty in the dime package, and Jarius Wynn was getting some snaps as a reserve down lineman in nickel.
"We played a lot of young players," defensive coordinator Dom Capers said in an extended session with reporters after the season ended. "Hopefully the experience those guys gained will make them that much better.
"We're talking about five rookies there that contributed some."
Barring an even worse rash of injuries on the defensive..

Title: Plenty Of Packers Connections To Super Bowl Teams
Link: http://www.packers.com/news/stories/2010/02/02/1/
Date : Tue, 02 Feb 2010 10:14:23 CST
Packers Story: When the Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints take the field this Sunday in Super Bowl XLIV, there will be a handful of players and coaches involved in the game that have ties to the Packers, as well as many members of the Green Bay organization that have links back to the two teams playing in the league's title contest.
Here is a look at some of the Green Bay connections to each team in Super Bowl XLIV:
NEW ORLEANS SAINTS
* Saints starting safety Darren Sharper played the first eight seasons (1997-2004) of his career with the Packers, earning Pro Bowl recognition with the team in 2000 and 2002. Sunday will be Sharper's second career Super Bowl appearance, with the first one coming in his rookie season of 1997 with the Packers when they took on Denver in Super Bowl XXXII.
* Saints backup quarterback Mark Brunell began his NFL career with the Packers in 1993 as a fifth-round draft choice. He served as Brett Favre's bac..

Title: Rodgers Throws Two Touchdown Passes In Pro Bowl
Link: http://www.packers.com/news/stories/2010/02/01/1/
Date : Mon, 01 Feb 2010 09:21:31 CST
Packers Story: Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers led the NFC with 197 yards passing and two touchdown passes in his Pro Bowl debut, but the NFC fell to the AFC 41-34 on Sunday in Miami.
Rodgers, who started for the NFC in his first Pro Bowl appearance, completed 15-of-19 passes (78.9 percent) for a game-high 197 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions for a 145.0 passer rating. He led the offense for the first three drives and helped the NFC put up points on each one of them.
On the NFC's first possession, Rodgers found 49ers tight end Vernon Davis on a play-action pass to the AFC's 33-yard line for a 36-yard gain. The pass helped set up a 47-yard field goal from Eagles kicker David Akers to narrow the AFC's lead to 7-3.
With the NFC trailing 14-3 the next time he took the field, Rodgers pump faked before finding Giants wide receiver Steve Smith deep down the field for a 48-yard touchdown.
After the NFC defense forced a three-and-out from the AFC, Rodgers ..

Title: Offenses Light Up Soggy Pro Bowl Scoreboard As AFC Comes Out On Top
Link: http://www.packers.com/news/stories/2010/01/31/1/
Date : Sun, 31 Jan 2010 08:24:10 CST
Packers Story: MIAMI -- In its new role as a warmup to the Super Bowl, the Pro Bowl became a series of wind sprints.
Long gains were the rule and hard hitting was the exception as the AFC beat the NFC 41-34 on Sunday night.
Light showers fell for much of the game, stirring memories of a rainy Super Bowl in Miami three years ago. But uniforms remained mostly spotless, with more pushing and shoving than tackling.
"It's different. It was like 7 on 7," NFC linebacker Brian Orakpo said. "Everybody came out here trying not to get hurt and give the fans a good show"
Matt Schaub of the Houston Texans threw for 189 yards and two AFC scores, and was chosen the most valuable player.
"It's a game you watch growing up as a kid and wonder if you could ever be in," Schaub said. "To actually be a part of it is incredible."
Aaron Rodgers also threw two touchdown passes, and NFC teammate DeSean Jackson had two scoring catches.
From the standpoint of tick..
